No Oporto's in Porto (Portugal)

We flew out from London and arrived that evening to typical London weather in Porto (aka Oporto). It eased up for a few dry brief patches and we walked aimlessly around trying to find a place that was still open that late - even Macca's was closed. Eventually we returned to one of the side streets near our hostel and found a fantastic little student bar where we had some awesome and very warming bean soup, a bifanas (a spicy meat sandwich) and some Portuguese beer.

The next day was rainy and we set out for some sightseeing. This is the church near our hostel.


We then made our way down to the Avenida dos Aliados before heading up to the Sé (Cathedral) via some wrong turns in the Ribiera (Old Town) district.


For some reason, we couldn't seem to find an entrance so we didn't go in.


We then walked across this very tall bridge (Dom Luís Iron Bridge) across the Douro River to the south side of Porto for the purpose of trying some port (naturally, where else but Porto?).




One of Tam's colleagues from work had suggested the Sandemans cave and so we headed there while the rain had eased up a bit.






We took the tour and were guided by a lady in one of their trademark sombreros and student's capes and learnt all about how Port is made and we finally got to sample some of the good stuff.




That was pretty much all we did in Porto. We didn't have that many plans for there but the rain didn't help. Highlights: student pubs, bifanas and Sandemans port. Sadly, we couldn't find any Oporto's there.
